Data Workers vs Collibra Guardian Agents: An Agent That Stays in Bounds Can Still Read a Wrong Table
Collibra Guardian Agents supervise what AI agents do. Collibra's own survey says AI failures trace back to the data foundation. Data Workers keeps the data products agents read correct: detected, fixed after one approval, verified, reversible.
Collibra Guardian Agents supervise what AI agents do at runtime, inside Collibra's AI governance control plane; Data Workers is the Autonomous Agentic Data Platform, whose agents keep the data products those AI agents read correct. For the owner of those data products, Data Workers wins because an agent can stay inside every boundary and still read a wrong table, and only a fix at the cause changes the answer.
Data Workers exists to reduce your data ops to zero. Its Autonomous Data Conductor runs the detect, diagnose, fix, review and verify loop across every warehouse, orchestrator, transform layer and BI tool, directing the whole agent swarm, and it reasons across quality, schema, lineage and cost. Autonomy is set per domain on a dial from observe-only to fully autonomous. Collibra's Guardian Agents automate one slice: supervising what AI agents do at runtime.
This post is for the person who owns the data products those agents read. Collibra's own research names your problem. In its 2026 Hallucination Tax Report with The Harris Poll, 72% of decision-makers agree that when AI initiatives fall short, "the root cause almost always traces back to an unaligned or poor data foundation." A guardian that watches the agent does not touch that root cause. An agent can stay inside every boundary and still read a table whose numbers are wrong.
Key takeaways
- •Data Workers takes the data platform under your AI agents to autonomous operation: incidents, quality, schema change and cost in one loop, with governed context for the agents on top. Guardian Agents supervise agent behaviour.
- •Collibra's own survey puts the cause in the data. 72% say AI shortfalls trace back to the data foundation; 87% say their teams regularly re-verify that agent context "remained accurate and current."
- •Guardian Agents check behaviour against boundaries: "data access, tool usage, permissions, or another control." A permitted read of a wrong table crosses no boundary.
- •Collibra Data Quality & Observability detects, then hands off. "Issue workflows assign tasks, notify owners and log every action." The repair is a person's.
- •Data Workers is the piece to own first for the data-product owner: it fixes the data product at the cause after one approval, re-validates it, and keeps a receipt with rollback.
What Collibra does well
Collibra calls itself "the enterprise AI control plane." AI Command Center keeps a registry of AI use cases, models and agents and routes governance assessments to a steward, per its docs. Agent Contracts set "layered, machine-readable controls that scale across the agent fleet." Guardian Agents carry those controls into runtime, "supporting intervention when an agent moves outside its intended boundaries from flagging and escalating an issue to blocking an unauthorized action," including for agents built outside Collibra. Its Data Quality & Observability product deploys "automated and custom monitors to instantly detect and address anomalies," and "lineage shows the root cause upstream and every product, model and owner affected downstream." For a CDO who needs one place to say what each agent may touch, and to score data quality, that is a real answer.
The four tests
Scored for one job: the data products your AI agents read stay correct, and get restored when they break.
| Test | Collibra (Guardian Agents and DQ&O) | Data Workers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Executes the fix | Guardian Agents range from "visibility and escalation to redirecting behavior" to blocking (blog). DQ&O "Issue workflows assign tasks, notify owners." | Applies the fix the owning agent drafted and dry-ran, at the cause, after one named approval. |
| 2. Verifies at the consumer | Guardian Agents check agent behaviour against its boundaries. DQ&O monitors score the data. | Affected tables and downstream models are re-validated against quality and contract assertions; a failed check retries or escalates. |
| 3. Receipt with undo | Issue workflows "log every action"; Guardian Agents report which control was breached. | Receipt (what changed, why, blast radius) and rollback on every change. |
| 4. Works across tools and clouds | Governs agents across platforms; DQ jobs push down to the warehouse. | Warehouses, orchestrators, dbt and BI in one context graph, 50+ connectors. |

Their claim beside their documentation
Collibra's launch release ties wrong AI answers to "the absence of structured context and runtime governance," and offers Agent Contracts and Guardian Agents as the cure. Its Guardian Agents post is precise about what they watch: whether an agent "remains within its intended boundaries including how it interacts with data, tools, systems, and other resources." The owner learns "whether the issue involves data access, tool usage, permissions, or another control." When "behavior falls outside those boundaries," the response runs from visibility to, "when block mode is enabled, stopping unauthorized actions before they occur."
Every trigger there is about the agent. None is about whether the table it was allowed to read is right. Collibra's own survey says that is where shortfalls start, so the control plane is pointed at the second-most-likely cause.
On status: the Sep 23 release says Agent Contracts and Guardian Agents "will be available through the AI Command Center in October." Confirm availability with Collibra.
Index grade. The Agentic Data Engineering Index has no Collibra row, so this grade is ours, on its scale. For keeping data products correct we grade Collibra L1: DQ&O detects and assigns, Guardian Agents flag and block agents, and no page describes a change applied to data. Blocking an agent is a real control on the agent; it does not repair the data. Data Workers sits at L3 on incidents, data quality and schema and change review: it applies after approval and leaves a receipt with rollback.
Why doesn't Collibra just do this itself?
Because its value is being the neutral record across every system around it. Fixing a dbt model, rerunning an Airflow DAG or reversing a table change needs scoped write credentials in tools Collibra does not own, a blast radius across other teams' models, a named approver, a rollback and a check afterwards. That is an operations product with a different liability. Collibra routes the issue to the owner and logs it; doing the repair is the job Data Workers took.
How Data Workers does it
Data Workers is the Autonomous Agentic Data Platform. For the data-product owner, three parts work as one.
- •The Autonomous Data Conductor runs detect, diagnose, fix, review and verify. "Observability tells you something broke, then a human spends the night fixing it"; the Conductor closes that gap. After one named approval it applies the change the owning agent drafted and dry-ran, at the cause, then re-validates. It ships observe-only and opens domain by domain; the dial goes to fully autonomous.
- •The Data Context Wizard is one governed context graph across warehouses, dbt, orchestration, BI and existing catalogs and glossaries, so Collibra's definitions can sit in it as context. It gives the approver the blast radius and gives your AI agents context that the fleet keeps current, which goes at the 87% re-verification burden from the data side.
- •Spellbook Data Catalog is the inbox to approve, steer, send back or roll back, with the receipt attached.

One incident on each side
This is an illustration, not a customer case. A NetSuite admin turns on multi-currency. Fivetran lands amount in transaction currency into Snowflake, dbt builds fct_revenue, Airflow runs revenue_daily, and Looker plus a finance copilot read it. Collibra has the copilot under an agent contract that allows reads of fct_revenue.
| Time | With Collibra | With Data Workers |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 01:00 | amount changes meaning. Guardian Agents watch the copilot, not the column. | The quality agent sees the distribution shift on amount and a new currency column. The Conductor opens an incident. |
| 02:00 | dbt builds green; not_null tests pass. | The Context Wizard lists the blast radius: fct_revenue, revenue_daily, a Looker explore and the copilot's revenue context. |
| 02:20 | If a DQ&O monitor breaks, the issue workflow assigns the steward and notifies the owner. | The agent drafts a dbt change converting to USD at the daily rate and dry-runs it. |
| 07:30 | The copilot reads fct_revenue, which its contract allows. No boundary is crossed; nothing is flagged. EMEA revenue is overstated in its answer to the CFO. | The open incident in Spellbook lists the copilot's revenue context in its blast radius, so the owner sees it first thing. |
| 08:00 | The owner opens the issue and starts tracing by hand. | The model owner approves in Spellbook; the change merges and dbt reruns. |
| 08:25 | Tracing continues. The CFO's number is already in a forecast email. | Revenue by region reconciles to NetSuite totals; the receipt records the diff, approver and rollback. |
The guardian did its job: the agent stayed in bounds. The monitor may have fired. The data was still wrong at 07:30, because nothing in that stack repairs it.
Which one the data team should own first
Collibra governs what AI agents may do, and its own survey says AI shortfalls start in the data foundation. For the owner of the data products those agents read, Data Workers is the piece to own first: it detects the break, fixes it at the cause after one approval, verifies it and keeps the undo, and the same loop runs pipelines, quality, schema change, cost and access. Collibra's glossary and policies can sit in the Context Wizard as context. If you already run Collibra, read You're on Collibra for how the two connect.
FAQ
Is Data Workers an alternative to Collibra Guardian Agents?
For keeping the data under your AI agents correct, yes. Guardian Agents watch agent behaviour against boundaries such as "data access, tool usage, permissions, or another control." Data Workers repairs the data product itself, at the cause, and re-validates it.
Can I keep Collibra and add Data Workers?
Yes. Collibra holds policy and agent contracts; Data Workers reads its glossary as context and keeps the tables correct, with a receipt and rollback on every change.
What does Collibra not do that Data Workers does?
Apply the fix. Collibra Data Quality & Observability runs issue workflows that "assign tasks, notify owners and log every action," and the Guardian Agents blog describes responses from escalation to blocking an agent. No page we read describes a change applied to data.
Does Data Workers act without a person?
Only as far as you allow, per domain. Each domain starts observe-only, fixes wait for a named approver, and the dial goes to fully autonomous when you choose.
The outcome
Reduce your data ops to zero. Collibra automates one slice, governing the agent, and governing the agent cannot correct the table. Data Workers runs the platform under your AI agents with agents of its own: it fixes, verifies and can undo each change at the cause, and turns each domain's dial toward fully autonomous as trust builds.
