We published this grading and we graded ourselves in it, so it is not independent. What it is instead is checkable: every cell below cites the public page it was graded from, including ours, so you can disagree with a specific grade in one click rather than take our word for anything.
Data Workers is not at level 4 in any lane. Data Workers was graded last, from dataworkers.io, llms.txt and the public GitHub repository only, by the same two rules that capped every other vendor: an approval gate has to be documented for L3, and unattended application has to come with a documented receipt and rollback for L4. We are not L4 anywhere. The autonomy dial on the Conductor describes an unattended mode, but no public page states the policy under which it applies changes, so it does not count. Pipeline build is graded propose because the community edition gates pipeline generation behind a paid tier a stranger cannot inspect. Spellbook is in preview and is graded propose. Cross-cloud scope is graded propose under the same cap applied to Alkera, Altimate and Atlan: connectors to three warehouses are evidenced, a gated change spanning two of them is not shown.
Where Altimate AI is ahead of us
This section comes first on purpose. These are the lanes where Altimate AI's public pages evidence a higher autonomy level than ours do, on 2026-09-09.
Pipeline build
Creating or migrating transformation code and pipelines from a request, through validation to deployment.
Altimate AI L3 Apply with approval source
Data Workers L2 Propose source
Build, test and deploy production-quality dbt pipelines. Builder mode requires approval before dangerous operations, with DROP DATABASE, DROP SCHEMA and TRUNCATE hard-blocked; Analyst mode is read-only. Gate evidenced in the README.
Where we are ahead of Altimate AI
Data quality
Rules, anomaly detection and remediation of bad or missing data in production tables.
Altimate AI L2 Propose source
Data Workers L3 Apply with approval source
README: data quality validation and PII detection, SQL anti-pattern detection. The harness drafts findings and tests; applying fixes to production data is not documented.
Schema and change review
Reviewing a proposed change (PR, migration, schema evolution) for downstream impact, and acting on the verdict.
Altimate AI L2 Propose source
Data Workers L3 Apply with approval source
Column-level lineage extraction across dialects and schema-aware impact assessment. Produces the assessment; a human acts on it.
Where the two are level
Same autonomy level on the same scale. These are the lanes where the grading does not separate the two products and something other than autonomy should decide.
Cross-cloud scope
The level at which the agent operates when the estate spans more than one warehouse or cloud (for example Snowflake and BigQuery in one workspace). Single-platform products are graded not evidenced here, not L0.
Altimate AI L2 Propose source
Data Workers L2 Propose source
Thirteen warehouses in one harness including Snowflake, BigQuery and Databricks; optimisation across all three on the homepage. Drafting across platforms is evidenced; applying across two is not.
Where one side could not be graded
The index grades a lane with no public evidence as not evidenced, never as level 0, because level 0 is a real grade for a product that detects and alerts. These cells count for neither side and are here so the six lanes add up.
Incident resolution
A pipeline or table breaks (freshness, failed run, wrong numbers). What does the agent do between the alert and the verified fix?
Altimate AI not evidenced source
Data Workers L3 Apply with approval source
Neither the homepage nor the altimate-code README names incident response or on-call resolution as a capability. Not evidenced.
Catalog and documentation
Producing and maintaining descriptions, semantic definitions, ownership and lineage in a catalog or context layer.
Altimate AI not evidenced source
Data Workers L2 Propose source
Documentation generation exists in the older dbt Power User extension but was not on any page fetched this pass. Not evidenced; contest with a URL.
What each one is
Altimate AI
Agentic data engineering platform: dbt pipeline build, migration, warehouse optimisation; open-source altimate-code harness.
Licence: MIT (altimate-code); platform proprietary. SOC 2: yes. SOC 2 listed on the Enterprise tier; the repository's July pass verified a report and pen-test summary are available under NDA via a named process. MCP: Yes; the local extension exposes an MCP endpoint with dbt, SQL, lineage and FinOps tools. Funding: $2M (SEC Form D, 2022); no later round found.
Data Workers
An autonomous agentic data platform: four modules that run the detect, diagnose, fix, review and verify loop on a data platform, with a named human approving anything irreversible. The core is Apache-2.0 and free.
Licence: Apache-2.0 core, proprietary platform. SOC 2: no Type II and no customer references. That is a real reason to choose someone else and it is stated on our security page.
What each one costs
From the published pricing census, live-fetched on 2026-09-10. Of the 21 vendors reviewed on their own websites, six publish a rate a buyer can read without contacting sales.
Altimate AI: Published rate card
Per-seat subscription plus a published token top-up rate: Community free (10M tokens once); Pro $29/seat/month incl. 20M tokens per seat per month; top-ups $5 per 1M tokens; Enterprise custom. Read from their pricing page on 2026-09-10. The only vendor in this census that publishes a dollar rate for model tokens on its own pricing page.
Data Workers: Published rate card
Pilot Program $7,500 one-time, then Scale from $1,000 per month with no usage meter, as published on 10 September 2026. The open-source core is Apache-2.0 and free, and you pay your own model provider directly at your own rate. Pricing.

How to read the scale
The word agent now covers all six of these, which is why the index grades each lane separately rather than awarding a product one number.
- L0 Alert. Detects and notifies.
- L1 Suggest. Explains or recommends; human does everything.
- L2 Propose. Drafts the change; human applies.
- L3 Apply with approval. Agent applies after a named human approves; dry-run; receipt.
- L4 Autonomous with receipts. Routine changes applied unattended within policy; every change has an audit receipt and rollback.
- L5 Self-verifying operation. Detects, fixes, verifies the outcome and learns, across systems, with governed escalation.

When to choose Altimate AI over us
- When you need a SOC 2 attestation to get through procurement. SOC 2 listed on the Enterprise tier; the repository's July pass verified a report and pen-test summary are available under NDA via a named process. This is the most common reason a buyer should not pick us today.
- When pipeline build is the lane that decides your purchase. Their public pages evidence a higher autonomy level there than ours do.
- When you need customer references you can call. We are pre-revenue and have none to offer, and no amount of product quality substitutes for that if your process requires it.
