dbt Core is the free open-source CLI that compiles and runs SQL transformation projects against your warehouse. dbt Cloud is the managed SaaS built on top of Core — adding a hosted scheduler, IDE, CI/CD, documentation hosting, Semantic Layer, and Explorer. Teams pick Core for flexibility and cost; they pick Cloud for productivity and managed operations.

dbt Core — The Engine

dbt Core is Python code on your machine. It reads dbt_project.yml, compiles Jinja-wrapped SQL to executable SQL, and runs it against your warehouse. It handles dependencies, tests, docs generation, and macros. Everything else — scheduling, monitoring, alerting, developer IDE — is your problem.

Most teams run Core in CI pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI) and orchestrate it with Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect. This works, but requires ongoing DevOps investment to keep the pipelines healthy, the credentials rotated, and the environments reproducible across machines.

dbt Cloud — The Platform

dbt Cloud adds the stuff you would otherwise have to build yourself: a hosted scheduler (with parallel execution, SLAs, and alerts), a web-based IDE for developers, CI/CD that runs dbt build on pull requests, hosted documentation, Explorer for lineage, Semantic Layer for governed metrics, and the new Fusion engine for incremental compilation.

The value compounds with team size. A solo dbt developer can get by with Core and a text editor; a team of 15 analysts spends more time on environment setup than on SQL without Cloud's hosted IDE. The breakeven is usually around 5-10 active developers.

When Core Is Enough

Small teams with existing orchestration (Airflow, Dagster) often do fine with Core. If you already pay a DevOps engineer, adding dbt Core to your CI pipeline costs nothing. You lose the hosted IDE and Semantic Layer, but you gain complete control and zero license costs.

Core is also the right choice when you need to run dbt in environments Cloud does not support — air-gapped networks, on-prem warehouses, compliance-constrained clouds. Regulated industries and defense teams often have no choice but Core. If your security review forbids SaaS data access, Cloud is simply off the table regardless of other factors.

The other place Core still wins is experimentation. If you are prototyping a new data platform, running dbt Core locally is the fastest path to a working model. Cloud adds friction for throwaway experiments. Serious prototypes eventually graduate to production on either Core or Cloud, but the initial exploration is almost always local.

When Cloud Wins

Cloud wins when developer productivity matters more than license cost. The web IDE lets analysts work on dbt projects without installing Python, cloning repos, or configuring profiles.yml. CI/CD with state deferral runs only the models affected by a PR, cutting compute costs. The Semantic Layer governs metrics across tools. Fusion (rolled out in 2025) dramatically speeds up compilation on large projects.

Most growing analytics teams cross a breakeven point where the engineering time saved exceeds the license cost — usually around 5-10 active developers. Past that, running Core in-house becomes a hidden tax on the team's velocity that is easy to ignore but expensive in practice.

The 2024-2026 Pricing Changes

dbt Labs restructured pricing in 2024-2025 to tiered seats (Developer / Team / Enterprise) plus usage-based Semantic Layer querying. The old per-seat model has evolved — check current pricing before budgeting. Core stays free, but some features (Explorer, Semantic Layer, Fusion) are Cloud-only.

Fusion is worth calling out separately. Launched in preview in 2025, Fusion is a new Rust-based dbt engine that compiles projects 10-100x faster than Core's Python compiler. For teams with 1,000+ models, this is the difference between a 30-second CI run and a 3-minute one. Fusion is Cloud-only, which is the single biggest reason mature teams are upgrading from Core in 2026.

The Hybrid Path

Many teams run Core in CI (via GitHub Actions or GitLab) and Cloud for scheduling and the IDE. This splits the cost by usage — pay Cloud only for developer seats and scheduler runs, not for CI compute. It is the best-of-both-worlds answer when license cost is a concern but you still want the IDE and Semantic Layer. Most dbt Cloud plans support this hybrid pattern explicitly.

The other hybrid pattern is running dbt Core in Airflow or Dagster for scheduling, while still using dbt Cloud for the IDE and Semantic Layer. This gives you orchestrator-level control over scheduling (Dagster assets, Airflow DAGs, etc.) without losing the Cloud developer experience. dbt Labs has explicitly supported this pattern since 2023 and it is common at large enterprises.

Typical Migration Path

  • Start with Core — ship first models in CI pipelines
  • Hit developer onboarding pain — 5+ analysts waiting on local setup
  • Evaluate Cloud — trial the IDE and scheduler
  • Move scheduling to Cloud — keep CI in GitHub, scheduler in Cloud
  • Adopt Semantic Layer — for governed metric definitions

Developer Experience Differences

The developer experience gap is real and widening. In Core, every analyst needs a local Python environment, a dbt profile, credentials configured, and a working IDE extension. In Cloud, they open a browser tab and start editing. For a team of 15 analysts with rotating membership, the setup tax on Core adds up to weeks of wasted onboarding per year — easily more than the Cloud license costs.
